Poetry Terms
1. rhythm- a musical quality produced by the repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables or by the repetition of certain other sound patterns
2. meter- a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry
3. free verse- poetry without a regular meter or rhyme scheme
4. mood- a special quality or atmosphere
5. simile- a comparison between two unlike things using the words like, as, than, and resembles
6. alliteration- the repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds in words that are very close together
7. imagery- language that appeals to the senses
8. personification- a figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes
9. symbol- a person, place, thing, or event that has meaning in itself and also stands for something else
10. inference- a conclusion that can be drawn from hints, clues, or other given information
11. dialect- a way of speaking characteristic of a certain geographical area or a certain group of people
12. theme- main idea in a work of literature
13. rhyme scheme- pattern of rhymes in a poem
14. onomatopoeia- the use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning
15. refrain- a repeated sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines
16. tone- the attitude the writer takes toward a literary work, its characters, the events that it tells about, and its audience
17. metaphors- a comparison between two unlike things in which one thing becomes another
18. allusion- a reference to someone or something that is known from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports, or some other field most people are familiar with
19. lyric- a poem that expresses the personal feelings or thoughts of a speaker
20. narrative- a poem that tells a story
21. point of view- the vantage point from which the story is told (first person, third person, omniscient)
